Action-Packed Football Review Of The Week: EP4

Real Madrid wins the Super Cup

European Football Review – Episode 4 (till January 14): As expected, the weekend wasn’t only action-packed, but shocking as well. Three AFCON giants had winless games in seemingly mid-fixtures, while the Spanish Super Cup was a reverse of the previous year, as Madrid emerged as winners.

The main Premier League games of the weekend whetted our appetites with 4 and 5-goal thrillers respectively. It was indeed a weekend to remember, as all top 5 European leagues returned to duty for the first time in weeks. You probably missed a few of those, Worry less, we’ve got you covered.

English Premier League Reviews

Newcastle 2-3 Manchester City

City had the early lead through a backheel finish from Bernardo Silva in the 26th minute. However, two quick goals from Isak and Gordon in the 35th and 37th minute saw Newcastle head into halftime with the lead.

Kevin De Bruyne was the hero of the day, marking his return with an exquisite cameo at Saint James Park. The Belgian midfielder, who was playing for the first time since the first game of the season, came on in the 69th minute, with his said trailing 2-1. It took him just four minutes to make an impact, sending a low shot beyond the reach of Dubravka with 16 minutes to go.

After minutes of pushing for a winner, De Bruyne then sent an angled pass which was perfectly controlled by Bobb. Bobb then poked past Dubravka to give City the win. City moves up to second, mounting more pressure on their way to their 4th consecutive league trophy.

Man United 2-2 Tottenham

On two occasions, Tottenham came from behind to snatch a point at Old Trafford. United secured the early lead when striker, Rasmus Hojlund, netted his second goal in as many games after a discouraging start to life in the Premier League. A brilliant header from Richarlison gave Tottenham the right response to level the game.

Again, United took the lead with Rashford netting his first Old Trafford goal since May. Both teams seemed to take turns in front of the goal, as Bentacur reacted shortly after Rashford’s goal. A pass from debutant, Timo Werner, found a running Bentacur, who put the North London side in front again. The result moved United up to 7th position, while Tottenham lost the chance to move into the top 4. Spurs sit 5th, level on points with 4th placed Arsenal who have more goal difference.

Spanish Super Cup Final Review

Real Madrid 4-1 Barcelona

It was a day specially made for the Brazilian Madridstas, Vinicius and Rodrygo, who split all 4 goals between them. Barcelona were completely humiliated after Vinicius netted a hat trick in the first 39 minutes. Madrid scored the first two goals before Lewandowski scored a volley to put Barca back in the game.

But they weren’t going to last so long, as Araujo brought Vinicius down four minutes after Barca’s goal. Rodrygo sealed the game in the 63rd minute and gave Real Madrid their first of a possible four trophies this season.
