Football Review: The Wins, Losses, and Close Calls of the Football World

Liverpool vs Arsenal

European Football Review (till December 24). It was a relatively silent weekend that lacked sporting actions in Europe’s top leagues, barring England and Italy. Perhaps, you were too engaged in the Yuletide to catch any of the weekend actions, we’ve got you covered.

We bring you football review(s) and updates of the top, mind-blowing football moments over the weekend.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL REVIEW

Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal

For the second game in a row, a Liverpool home game ends in a draw. This time around, it’s more thrilling and balanced encounter than the previous one. Arsenal scored an early goal after Gabriel Maghalaes headed in a Martin Odegaard freekick in the third minute. Arsenal looked like they were going to wreak more damage before Liverpool grew into the game. Just when the game was about to hit the half-hour mark, Mohammed Salah did justice to a long ball from Trent Alexander Arnold and curled in the last goal of the game.

The second half saw both teams miss a couple of chances, with Arnold’s miss being the most outstanding. An Arsenal corner kick was cleared by the Liverpool defense, only to come straight to Odegaard. A collision between Odegaard and Zinchenko led to a dangerous counterattack from Liverpool, with Declan Rice facing five Liverpool players. After running down to the Arsenal box, Salah laid a timely pass to Arnold whose shot hit the crossbar. It was a decisive miss that kept the score even. After an intense battle, the game ended with a result that left Arsenal top of the league at Christmas.

Westham 2-0 Man United

United held Liverpool to a surprising draw at Anfield last week, but couldn’t repeat such at the London Stadium. The first half had United in total control and gave them their fair share of chances, which they missed.

Unluckily, West Ham grew into the game in the second half and ended with 2 goals. Lucas Pacqueta, who’s just coming off a hat trick of assists vs Wolves, added another two to his name, assisting both goals. Jarred Bowen and Mohammed Kudud were the goalscorers on the day. As a result, Westham moved up from 8th to 6th position after United and Newcastle lost their fixtures.

ITALIAN SERIE A FOOTBALL REVIEW

Frosinone 1-2 Juventus

An injury-plagued Juventus team snatched a late win at Frosinone Calcio. Allegri’s long injury list forced the start of teenage Kenan Yildiz, who repaid his manager’s trust with a brilliant goal. He dribbled past 3 players and slotted the ball into the bottom corner in his first start. Jaime Baez levelled for the hosts later on in the game and Frosinone were looking forward to just their second draw in 8 games vs Juventus, after losing six since 2006.

A late header from Dusan Vlahovic nine minutes from time sealed the win for Juventus who remain second on the league table. Inter Milan also won 2-0 at the San Siro against Leece, maintaining their 4-point lead at the top of the table.

Roma 2-0 Napoli

A game that was largely passive for over an hour had plenty of drama packed in the last 25 minutes. The game ended goalless in the first half and Roma only looked promising after the 66th minute, when Politana was shown a straight red card for kicking Zaleinski. The hosts needed only 10 minutes after that incident to net their first.

As Roma beat Napoli

It wasn’t going to get better for Napoli, as star striker, Victor Osimhen, got his second yellow of the game four minutes from time. It looked like Roma was gaining momentum from each red card. In the stoppage time, not long after the second red card, Lukaku extended Roma’s lead. After the game, Roma moved from 8th to 6th, surpassing Napoli on the league table.

All other top European leagues had a Christmas break, hence, there were no games played.
